Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 October 2026
The Typist collects as little as it can. There are no ads, no advertising trackers and no analytics. The person responsible for your data (the "controller") is Roberto Alves Ferreira Junior, Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Contact: faru@thetypist.app.
What we store, and why
| Data | Why | Legal basis |
|---|---|---|
| An account ID (anonymous until you save your career) | To keep your scores and Pro status together | Contract |
| Your pen name and whether you show on leaderboards | To show your scores on public boards | Contract |
| Your email address, only if you save your career with an email code | To send sign-in codes and restore your career on other devices | Contract |
| Scores: speed, accuracy, corrections, characters, time, and for the weekly board the sheets accepted and cents earned | Leaderboards and your own records | Contract |
| The typists you follow | Friends boards | Contract |
| Pro status: plan, expiry date, where you bought it | To unlock Pro | Contract |
When you finish a run, the game sends your keystrokes so the server can check the score (the Daily Telegram is replayed in full). Only the resulting score is stored, not the keystrokes.
What stays on your device
Your books, imported files, recordings you pair, typing progress inside a book and your settings stay on your device. Books you import are never uploaded.
Services your device talks to directly
Some features fetch public information straight from other services. Those services see your device's IP address, as any website does:
- Book catalogues: Project Gutenberg, Gutendex, Standard Ebooks, Open Library, Wikidata, Wikipedia and Wikimedia, to find books and facts about them.
- Audiobooks: LibriVox, for dictation recordings.
- Live weather (off by default; only while Settings → Window is set to Live): GeoJS receives your IP address to estimate your area, and Open-Meteo receives coordinates rounded to about 1 km. Precise location is used only if you allow it, and is also rounded before it's sent.
Who processes data for us
| Service | What for |
|---|---|
| Supabase | Accounts, scores and leaderboards (servers in Europe) |
| Resend | Sending sign-in code emails (EU region) |
| RevenueCat | Managing Pro purchases and subscriptions |
| Stripe | Payment processing for web purchases. Stripe receives your payment details; we never do. |
| Apple App Store, Google Play | Purchases made in the mobile apps |
| Cloudflare | Hosting this website and forwarding email to our support address |
Some of these companies are based in the United States. Transfers are covered by the EU–US Data Privacy Framework or the European Commission's standard contractual clauses.
How long we keep it
- Account, pen name, scores and follows: until you delete your account. Deleting removes them straight away.
- Anonymous accounts that haven't been used for 24 months may be deleted.
- Purchase records: kept by RevenueCat and Stripe for as long as tax law requires (in the Netherlands, 7 years).
- Emails to our support address: as long as needed to help you, then deleted.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct, export or delete your data, and you can object to how we use it. Most of this you can do in the game: change your pen name, turn leaderboards off, or delete your account in Settings → Account. For anything else, write to faru@thetypist.app; we answer within a month.
If you're unhappy with how we handle your data, you can complain to the Dutch data protection authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, or the authority in your own country.
Children
If you're under 16, please ask a parent or guardian before saving your career with an email address or buying Pro.
Changes
If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll update the date above and tell you in the game.
